On Saturday, the three cases were confirmed to be human infections of H7N9 avian influenza, based on clinical observation, laboratory tests and epidemiological surveys.

此外,目前国内外尚无针对H7N9禽流感病毒的疫苗(there are no vaccines against the virus)。

First Human Cases Of H7N9 Bird Flu Emerge as 2 Chinese Men Die

H7N9 avian influenza, which was previously not known to cause infection in humans, has killed 2 men in China and has left a woman in critical condition, the Chinese health and family planning commission has confirmed according to Xinhua News Agency.

A customer carries a chicken bought from a poultry market in Kunming, Yunnan province January 23, 2009.

The two men - aged 87 and 27 - died March 4 and March 10, respectively. Their deaths were linked to the lesser-known strain of bird flu Saturday after the Chinese health and family planning commission confirmed the cases "based on clinical observation, laboratory tests and epidemiological surveys," the news agency has reported.

The third person with the infection, a 35-year-old woman from the city of Chuzhou, in Anhui Province is critically ill.

All three are said to have shown initial symptoms of fever and coughing which later intensified into pneumonia and difficult breathing, the commission has said in its report.

The three have not had any mutual contact and the dozens of people whom they contacted do not seem to have been affected by the flu, the Chinese government has said according to the New York Times.

The lesser known H7N9 strain of the avian (bird flu) has not been detected previously in humans, while the well-known H5N1 strain of the bird flu has killed hundreds of humans and millions of birds since 2003.
