A 17-year-old US high school student has been sentenced to 24-hours in jail for missing school after receiving a warning.

Judge Lanny Moriarty said he wanted to make an example of Willis High School student Diane Tran by sending her to jail for the night and fining her $100, in Willis, a small town in Texas, local TV station KHOU reports.

Judge Moriarty said he warned Year 11 student not to miss any more classes when she visited his Justice of the Peace court for truancy in April.

When the honour student missed class again, he issued a summons and had her arrested in court on May 24.

"If you let one of them run loose, what are you gonna do with the rest of them? Let them go too?" Judge Moriarty said.

"A little stay in a jail for one night is not a death sentence."

But Ms Tran said she had a good excuse for missing school — she has been forced to work two jobs to support her siblings after her parents split up and moved away from Willis.

The 17-year-old said she is often too exhausted to wake up in time for school, sometimes missing the entire day or arriving after attendance has been taken.

Ms Tran currently lives with the family of one of her employers who owns a wedding reception venue, while her older brother attends Texas A&M University and her younger sister lives with relatives in Houston.

She works at the Vineyard of Waverly Manor on weekends and at a drycleaners full time throughout the week.

Her schoolmate Devin Hill said: "She goes from job to job, from school she stays up until 7am."

However, after pressure from local TV station KHOU11, the judge said he might reconsider Ms Tran's case with a mind to changing the sentence.
