Nuclear power

is the use of sustained nuclear fission to generate heat and do useful work. Scientists are experimenting with fusion energy for future generation, but these experiments do not currently generate useful energy.

Nuclear power provides about 6% of the world's energy and 13–14% of the world's electricity, with the U.S., France, and Japan together accounting for about 50% of nuclear generated electricity.

Nuclear power is controversial and there is an ongoing debate about the use of nuclear energy. Proponents contend that nuclear power is a sustainable energy source that reduces carbon emissions. Opponents believe that nuclear power poses many threats to people and the environment.

A nuclear power plant

is a place where people make electricity using heat from nuclear reactions. A nuclear power plant has a place where the nuclear reaction happens called a reactor. The plant also has machines which remove heat from the reactor and make electricity. Electricity made by nuclear power plants is called nuclear power.

Serious nuclear and radiation accidents

There are about four hundred nuclear power plants in the world, with many in the United States, France, and Japan. Some famous accidents at nuclear power plants were:

2011 Fukushima I 福岛accident in Japan

1986 Chernobyl 切尔诺贝利disaster in Ukraine

1979 Three Mile Island 三里岛accident in the United States.

The 2011 Japan Earthquake

A nuclear power plant in Japan suffered one explosion as a result of a 8.9-magnitude quake. Fears of a nuclear meltdown come on the heels of the devastation the quake and resulting tsunami brought to the island nation, leaving at least 10,000 dead.

Japan’s disaster leaves many asking: Could it happen here?

Shall we throw away the apple because of its core / give up eating for fear of chocking?

In recent years scientific advances have been witnessed in this country.

Does society need protecting from nuclear power due to some serious radiation accidents like those happened in Fukushima (Japan) or Chernobyl (Ukraine)? Most emphatically not.

We should not abandon the possibility of using a scientific idea to do good to the human race because of some accidents happen in the application of science.

The United States has more than 100 nuclear power generators.President Obama has pushed expansion of nuclear power in the United States as a way to ease dependence on foreign oil while creating new jobs.

Still others believe this is a wake-up call for the world to pursue safe and greener sources of energy.

Conventional power plant & nuclear power plant

Both are similar in that they use steam to turn the steam turbines that consequently turn the generators to produce electricity.
The heat required in a hydropower plant is used to produce this steam from water is obtained either inconventional power plant where coal, oil, or natural gas is burnt to produce heat or in nuclear power plant where uranium and plutonium contained in the nuclear fuel undergo nuclear fission and thus producing heat.

So, the difference between the two power plants is in source of heat used to produce the steam.
