Traffic congestion occurs when the traffic demand is greater than the available road capacity. Congestion can be reduced by either increasing road capacity (supply), or by reducing traffic (demand).

Causes:

overpopulation, poor magement, rush hr, incidents, road works, weather events, unreliable drivers, etc.

Does an underground system sound a good idea in this city?

Given enough options, people usually take the shortest and fastest route in order to reach a destination.

But it has to be convenient.

A big city should have an extensive public transport system, largely based on metros, buses and taxis. There are also bicycles, motorcycles, etc.

Nanchang metro project

5 lines; 2 stages

this city is going to complete the first-stage construction of 50.6kms in 2020

Shanghai

The Shanghai Metro has the largest urban rapid transit system in china, and the longest network in the world, with over 434 kms of tracks.

a daily ridership is 5.2 million

population is 23 million

Hongkong

An efficient metro and light rail system of 212 kms

a daily ridership 3.76 million

population is 7million

Congestion avoidence:

efficient management

traffic management improvements

intelligent transportation system

urban planning and design

road infrastructure

reasonable planning

convenient public transit system

safe parking lots

responsible drivers

civilized residents/ pedestrians

radio and traffic lights/signs

People should be more sensible about transportation rather than emotional about possessing vehicles.

light rail tracks are less costly/expensive to build

the vehicles are more efficient than on roads

Note:

metro; subway; tube; underground

UNDERGROUND BUS
