So what dangers do food problems pose to society?

Some of the common fears about food problems are what dangers they pose to society.

Contaminated foods have raised extensive public concern

The contaminated / tainted milk powder scandal currently reverberating in china, for example.

this poses serious moral and ethical dilemmas

it is worthy of consideration.

one should regard this field with caution

problems facing China:

1.

Chinese food exporters have gained market share mainly through low prices, but these gains could diminish if the quality of goods is constantly called into question.

The booming Chinese economy has also created food safety challenges.

for the past 20 years agricultural production has grown in China due to an extremely high use of fertilizers and pesticides on crops.

2.

China lacks effective institutions, most notably a strong self-regulating private sector

such industries are protected by local governments that own them.

a fragmented food producer system with many small farms and companies

sources of food products are difficult to trace

3.

China's rapid growth has created a growing wealth gap, mainly along urban and rural lines.

the Chinese government thus faces a difficult situation when the need to protect consumers requires shutting down dangerous food processors and farms that employ the rural poor.

 4.

China’s consumers lack a strong civil society and manufacturers do not have strong independent associations to address their collective interests in ensuring food safety.

5.

The government restricts news media coverage of food safety stories that might cause panic or lack of faith in the government system.

The govt has further reduced incentives of the manufacturers to self regulate

how:

Food must be kept safe by strong consumer safety laws, independent legal system, free media, and civil society organizations.

Chinese regulators must design their food safety system around China’s unique political structure.

In such cases, the government should not underestimate the problems in food safety.

Regulatory bodies should give some assessment of food safety/ reliability.

the role of legislators is to make sure that these rules are rigorously followed.

set up a coordinating committee

improve food safety

issue food and drug safety plans

carry out campaigns to close unsafe food processors.

strengthen their food inspection and regulatory systems

improve china’s food safety regulation

fix the country’s food production and regulatory systems.

build effective testing programs and production strategies.
